  • Kiss 105 launches across Yorkshire on Feb 14th linking with London’s Kiss 100 and Manchester's Kiss 102 to start new era in UK dance radio.

  • Roni Size & Reprazent scoop the Mercury Music Prize with the seminal album “New Forms”.

  • The Hacienda in Manchester was closed following a drug-related death and various shootings.

  • Black Hole Recordings was founded by Tiesto and Arny Bink in Breda, Netherlands.

  • DJ Mag launches the first Top 100 Poll voted by readers.
    The Notorious B.I.G is killed in a drive-by shooting. Puff Daddy & Faith Evans’ tribute to the rapper, sold over a million copies in the UK.

  • The KLF return for a 23 minutes performance called “F*ck the millennium” which premiered at 2K’s 1997 (What the F*ck’s Going On) event at London’s Barbican Arts Centre. 

  • The Prodigy released the controversial ”Smack My Bitch Up”.

  • Rapture TV lauches in the UK, bringing superclubs to the nations TVs.

  • Gatecrasher finds it permanent home at The Republic in Sheffield and starts a cultural revolution.

  • Electric Daisy Carnival holds it's first event.

  • Godskitchen move to Milton Keynes.

  • Brian Harvey is sacked from East 17 for telling the world Ecstasy is safe.

  • Helter Skelter pulls in 10,000 at Turweston Aerodrome.

  • Dave Pearce begins Dance Anthems on BBC Radio 1 which went on to run every Sunday night for 10 years.

  • Speed Garage arrives with artists likes Armand Van Helden, 187 Lockdown, Double 99, Loop Da Loop becoming masters of the bassline.
